Free TOEFL iBT Practice Test (2026): 20-Minute Score Estimate
The TOEFL iBT has evolved significantly. The 2026 version is shorter, more focused, and more demanding than earlier formats — and the practice materials you use need to reflect those changes. This guide covers what's new, how AI scoring works in the mock tests, and what the free 20-minute test can tell you.
What's Different About the 2026 TOEFL iBT Format?
| Section | 2026 Duration | Task types |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 30 min | Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage. Multistage adaptive. |
| Listening | 29 min | Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, Listen to an Academic Talk. Multistage adaptive. |
| Writing | 23 min | Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion. |
| Speaking | 8 min | Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview. |
Total base time: about 90 minutes, so the whole test takes under two hours with instructions. Scores are reported on a 1–6 band scale aligned with CEFR. The shorter format changes preparation: stamina matters less, while accuracy, efficiency, and adaptability matter more.
Why AI Scoring Changes Everything
Traditional TOEFL practice relied on human scoring for Speaking and Writing — meaning days of waiting and significant fees per scored response. AI scoring changes this entirely. AI scoring returns Writing and Speaking feedback in seconds instead of days. It is a practice estimate, not an official score.
- ▸Speaking: Fluency and pacing, pronunciation clarity, vocabulary range, grammatical accuracy, task completion.
- ▸Writing: Argument development, organisational coherence, vocabulary sophistication, grammatical range, task completion.
The Free Test and the Mock Tests: What to Expect
- ▸Free test: About 20 minutes, Reading and Listening only. No sign-in needed to start. Your result is an estimated band range, a CEFR level, and your weakest skill.
- ▸Mock tests: All four sections in the 2026 TOEFL iBT format, with a Prep Pass. Single-question navigation, embedded audio, microphone interface for Speaking, text editor for Writing.
- ▸Scoring: Writing and Speaking are AI-scored only in the mock tests.
- ▸Mock test score report: Overall score, section bands, CEFR level, and gap analysis.
Reading Section: 2026 Format and Preparation
About 50 items in 30 minutes, in three task types. Complete the Words: a short academic text where the second half of every other word is missing (10 gaps per text). Read in Daily Life: short non-academic texts such as notices, emails, menus, or posts, with 2–3 questions each. Read an Academic Passage: about 200 words with 5 questions (factual information, vocabulary in context, inference, relationship between ideas, purpose, main idea). Inference questions are the most commonly missed — the answer is implied, not stated. Practice asking: 'does the passage directly support this conclusion, or am I adding my own reasoning?'
Listening Section: 2026 Format and Preparation
About 47 items in 29 minutes. Listen and Choose a Response: hear a short question or statement (not shown on screen) and pick the best reply. Listen to a Conversation: a short exchange between two speakers, 2 questions. Listen to an Announcement: a campus or classroom announcement. Listen to an Academic Talk: a short talk by an instructor, 4 questions. Audio plays once — no replay. Effective notes capture: main topic, key supporting points, transition signals, and any specific numbers or names mentioned.
Speaking Section: 2026 Format and Preparation
Two tasks in about 8 minutes. Listen and Repeat: 7 sentences from one campus or academic scene, each a little longer than the last; you repeat each one in 8–12 seconds. Take an Interview: 4 questions from a recorded interviewer, 45 seconds each — early questions ask about facts and personal experience, later ones ask for an opinion you support. Practice with a stopwatch until 45 seconds of connected speech feels natural.
Writing Section: 2026 Format and Preparation
Three task types in 23 minutes. Build a Sentence: put scrambled words in order to complete a reply in a short exchange. Write an Email (7 min): an academic or social situation with a clear purpose, such as making a suggestion or proposing a solution. Write for an Academic Discussion (10 min, at least 100 words): respond to a professor's question by adding new ideas, not just agreeing with the two student posts. The old Integrated Writing task is gone.
How to Use AI Score Reports Strategically
- ▸Use section scores to set priorities — your lowest section gets significantly more time, not equal time.
- ▸Track your score over time. A single test shows where you are. A series of tests shows whether your preparation is working.
- ▸Identify patterns in your errors — if you consistently miss inference questions in Reading, that's a targeted skill gap, not a Reading problem generally.
