TOEFL score calculator

Since January 2026, TOEFL iBT reports four section bands and an overall band on a 1–6 scale. The overall band is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. Enter your section bands to see the result, the comparable score on the old 0–120 scale and the CEFR level.

Worked examples: four section bands → overall band

5.55.55.05.05.255.5110C1ETS's own example: 5.25 rounds up to 5.5.
4.04.04.04.54.1254.079B24.125 is nearer 4.0 than 4.5.

5.05.04.54.54.755.0101C14.75: ETS gives no example; we round up, like 5.25.
The overall score is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. ETS example: an average of 5.25 becomes 5.5. ETS gives no example for an average ending in .75. The calculator rounds it up to the next whole band, the same direction as ETS's .25 example.

C15.0 or 5.5
B24.0 or 4.5
B13.0 or 3.5
A22.0 or 2.5
A11.0 or 1.5
The same mapping applies to each section band and to the overall band.

The rounding rule

Add the four section bands and divide by four. Round the result to the nearest half band.

An average that ends in .25 rounds up: ETS's own example is 5.25, which becomes 5.5. Averages ending in .125 or .375 go to the nearest half band, so 4.125 becomes 4.0 and 4.375 becomes 4.5.

ETS does not give an example for an average ending in .75. This calculator rounds it up (4.75 becomes 5.0), in the same direction as the .25 example.

The comparable 0–120 score

For two years after January 2026, score reports also show a comparable total on the old 0–120 scale. ETS says it is the midpoint of the total range that matches your overall band. ETS publishes only the lowest total for each band, so we work out the top of each range from the next band up.

Section bands come first

This calculator starts from section bands. ETS does not publish how raw points on the new test convert to a section band, so we do not offer a raw-score converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my TOEFL overall score?

Add your four section bands, divide by four and round to the nearest half band. For example, 5.5, 5.5, 5.0 and 5.0 average 5.25, which rounds to 5.5.

Does an average of 4.25 round up or down?

Up, to 4.5. ETS's published example is an average of 5.25 becoming 5.5.

What happens with an average of 4.75?

ETS gives no example for averages ending in .75. Our calculator rounds 4.75 up to 5.0, in the same direction as ETS's .25 example.

What is the comparable 0–120 score?

During a two-year transition after January 2026, score reports include a comparable total on the old 0–120 scale. ETS describes it as the midpoint of the total range for your overall band, so band 4.5 (86–94) shows as 90.

Which CEFR level is my TOEFL band?

ETS maps 6 to C2, 5–5.5 to C1, 4–4.5 to B2, 3–3.5 to B1, 2–2.5 to A2 and 1–1.5 to A1. The same mapping applies to sections and the overall band.

Is the result official?

No. Only ETS issues official TOEFL scores. This calculator applies ETS's published rounding rule to the bands you enter.
