The Ultimate Guide to TOEFL iBT 2026: Every Change Explained
On January 21, 2026, ETS launched a comprehensively redesigned TOEFL iBT. The test is shorter, the scoring is clearer, and the task types are more aligned with real-world academic communication. If you've been using older study materials, this guide is essential reading.
What Changed in January 2026
The core change is structural: the TOEFL iBT moved from a 0โ120 point scale to a 1โ6 band scale, directly aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This makes TOEFL scores immediately comparable to IELTS and Cambridge exam results.
The test duration dropped from approximately 3 hours to under 2 hours. ETS removed the Integrated Writing task and replaced it with two new, more communicative writing tasks. The adaptive format was also introduced for Reading and Listening.
The New 1โ6 Scoring Scale
Each of the four sections receives a band score from 1.0 to 6.0 in 0.5 increments. Your overall score is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest half band. A 4.0 overall corresponds to CEFR B2 โ sufficient for most undergraduate admissions.
| Band | CEFR Level | Old Scale | University Entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | C2 โ Mastery | 114+ | Any institution globally |
| 5.5 | C1 โ Advanced | 107+ | Oxbridge, Ivy League |
| 5.0 | C1 โ Advanced | 95+ | Most top universities |
| 4.5 | B2 โ Upper Intermediate | 86+ | Standard undergraduate |
| 4.0 | B2 โ Upper Intermediate | 72+ | Community colleges |
Reading: New Task Types
The 2026 Reading section runs 30 minutes and contains approximately 50 items across three task types. The test is now adaptive: your performance on the first set determines the difficulty of the second set.
- โธComplete the Words โ Fill missing letters in a paragraph. Tests vocabulary in context.
- โธRead in Daily Life โ Short functional texts: notices, schedules, instructions.
- โธRead an Academic Passage โ The familiar long passage with multiple question types.
Listening Changes
The Listening section (29 minutes, 47 items) also became adaptive. Four new task types replace the older format:
- โธListen and Choose a Response โ Hear a short statement, pick the best reply.
- โธListen to a Conversation โ Campus dialogue with 5โ6 questions.
- โธListen to an Announcement โ Public or academic announcement.
- โธListen to an Academic Talk โ The familiar lecture format. Most complex and highest weight.
Writing: Email & Academic Discussion
The 23-minute Writing section now has two entirely new task types. The Integrated task is gone.
- โธBuild a Sentence โ Drag words into the correct sequence.
- โธWrite an Email โ Respond to a scenario in 7 minutes. Tests register and communication.
- โธWrite for an Academic Discussion โ Read a professor's question and two student posts, then write a 100+ word contribution in 10 minutes.
Speaking: New Interview Format
The Speaking section is now 8 minutes and simulates a real academic interview:
- โธListen and Repeat โ Hear a sentence and repeat it accurately.
- โธTake an Interview โ Answer 4 questions from a virtual interviewer. Each response is 30โ45 seconds.
How to Prepare for 2026
Stop using pre-2026 materials. Practice the Email task daily, work on Speaking fluency by recording yourself, and take at least 2 full mock tests before your real test date.
