The overall band is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band; an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

The rounding rule

Add the four bands and divide by four. Round to the nearest half band. An average that ends in .25 goes up to the next half band (6.25 becomes 6.5); one that ends in .75 goes up to the next whole band (6.75 becomes 7.0). An average such as 6.125 rounds down to 6.0.

Frequently asked questions

How is the IELTS overall band calculated?

It is the average of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band, with .25 rounding up to the next half band and .75 up to the next whole band.

What happens if my average is 6.125?

It rounds to 6.0, because 6.125 is closer to 6.0 than to 6.5.

Does Writing or Speaking count more than the other skills?

No. In the overall band all four skills count equally. Inside the Writing test, Task 2 counts for more than Task 1.

Can I use this for General Training?

Yes. The overall rounding rule is the same for Academic and General Training.

Is the result official?

No. Only IELTS issues official results. This calculator applies the published rounding rule to the bands you enter.
