TOEFL score conversion: 1–6 ↔ 0–120 ↔ CEFR

On January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT moved from the 0–120 total score to bands from 1 to 6. ETS publishes a comparison between the two scales and a mapping from bands to CEFR levels. The tables below reproduce them, with ETS's own notes. Checked against ETS on 2026-10-13.

ETS publishes the lowest old total for each band (“114+” and so on; Table 3. Score Concordance Between the 1-6 Band Levels and the 0-30 and 0-120 Score Scales). The range runs up to one point below the next band, and the comparable score is its midpoint, as ETS describes. ETS's sample score report shows band 4.5 as 90.

How to read the tables

The first table compares overall scores. ETS publishes the lowest old total for each band, for example 86+ for band 4.5. A band therefore covers a range of old totals, not a single number.

During the two-year transition, your score report also shows a comparable 0–120 total. ETS says it is the midpoint of the range, which is why band 4.5 (86–94) appears as 90.

The second table compares section scores: old 0–30 section scores against new section bands.

ETS's notes on the comparison

ETS notes that old total scores are the sum of the section scores and can come from different section score combinations. Converting an old total and converting the four old section scores can therefore give slightly different bands.

ETS calls the 0–120 figure on new score reports a comparable total score estimate. Institutions are updating their requirements at different times, so ETS advises contacting each institution to confirm its current requirement.

These tables compare old and new scores. They do not convert raw points on the new test into bands; ETS does not publish such a conversion.

Frequently asked questions

What is TOEFL band 4.5 on the old 0–120 scale?

ETS gives 86+ as the lowest old total for band 4.5; band 5 starts at 95, so band 4.5 covers 86–94. Score reports show the comparable score as 90, the midpoint.

What band is an old TOEFL score of 100?

Band 5. ETS's table puts band 5 at 95+ and band 5.5 at 107+, so totals from 95 to 106 compare to band 5.

What is a C1 TOEFL score?

ETS maps bands 5 and 5.5 to CEFR C1. On the old scale, band 5 starts at 95 and band 5.5 at 107.

Will score reports still show a 0–120 score?

Yes, for a two-year transition period after January 2026. Reports show the 1–6 bands and a comparable 0–120 total, which ETS describes as an estimate.

Can I convert my raw points into a TOEFL band?

No. ETS publishes the raw score ranges for each section (Reading 0–30, Listening 0–30, Writing 0–20, Speaking 0–55) but not how raw points convert to bands.

Where do these numbers come from?

From two ETS publications: the Updated TOEFL iBT Test Overview (Tables 2 and 3) and the ETS page Understanding TOEFL Scores, checked on 2026-10-13.
