TOEFL score calculator

Since January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT reports four section bands and an overall band on a 1–6 scale. Move the sliders to your section bands to see the overall band, the comparable 0–120 score and the CEFR level, then use ETS's tables below (checked 2026-10-13) to convert between the old and new scales.

ETS publishes the lowest old total for each band (“114+” and so on; Table 3. Score Concordance Between the 1-6 Band Levels and the 0-30 and 0-120 Score Scales). The range runs up to one point below the next band, and the comparable score is its midpoint, as ETS describes. ETS's sample score report shows band 4.5 as 90.

5.05.04.54.54.755.0101C14.75: ETS gives no example; we round up, like 5.25.
The overall score is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. ETS example: an average of 5.25 becomes 5.5. ETS gives no example for an average ending in .75. The calculator rounds it up to the next whole band, the same direction as ETS's .25 example.

TOEFL score range and maximum score

Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking) gets a band from 1 to 6 in half-band steps. The overall band is on the same 1–6 scale, so the maximum TOEFL iBT score is 6.

For two years after January 2026, score reports also show a comparable total on the old 0–120 scale, where the maximum is 120 (30 per section).

Inside each section, raw points are counted first (Reading 0–30, Listening 0–30, Writing 0–20, Speaking 0–55); ETS does not publish how raw points become a band.

The rounding rule

Add the four section bands and divide by four. Round the result to the nearest half band.

An average that ends in .25 rounds up: ETS's own example is 5.25, which becomes 5.5. Averages ending in .125 or .375 go to the nearest half band, so 4.125 becomes 4.0 and 4.375 becomes 4.5.

ETS does not give an example for an average ending in .75. This calculator rounds it up (4.75 becomes 5.0), in the same direction as the .25 example.

The comparable 0–120 score

For two years after January 2026, score reports also show a comparable total on the old 0–120 scale. ETS says it is the midpoint of the total range that matches your overall band. ETS publishes only the lowest total for each band, so we work out the top of each range from the next band up.

Section bands come first

This calculator starts from section bands. ETS does not publish how raw points on the new test convert to a section band, so we do not offer a raw-score converter.

How to read the tables

The first table compares overall scores. ETS publishes the lowest old total for each band, for example 86+ for band 4.5. A band therefore covers a range of old totals, not a single number.

During the two-year transition, your score report also shows a comparable 0–120 total. ETS says it is the midpoint of the range, which is why band 4.5 (86–94) appears as 90.

The second table compares section scores: old 0–30 section scores against new section bands.

ETS's notes on the comparison

ETS notes that old total scores are the sum of the section scores and can come from different section score combinations. Converting an old total and converting the four old section scores can therefore give slightly different bands.

ETS calls the 0–120 figure on new score reports a comparable total score estimate. Institutions are updating their requirements at different times, so ETS advises contacting each institution to confirm its current requirement.

These tables compare old and new scores. They do not convert raw points on the new test into bands; ETS does not publish such a conversion.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum TOEFL score?

6, the top of the 1–6 band scale, for each section and for the overall band. On the old scale, which score reports still show as a comparable total for two years after January 2026, the maximum is 120.

How do I calculate my TOEFL overall score?

Add your four section bands, divide by four and round to the nearest half band. For example, 5.5, 5.5, 5.0 and 5.0 average 5.25, which rounds to 5.5.

What happens with an average of 4.75?

ETS gives no example for averages ending in .75. Our calculator rounds 4.75 up to 5.0, in the same direction as ETS's .25 example.

What is the comparable 0–120 score?

During a two-year transition after January 2026, score reports include a comparable total on the old 0–120 scale. ETS describes it as the midpoint of the total range for your overall band, so band 4.5 (86–94) shows as 90.

What band is an old TOEFL score of 100?

Band 5. ETS's table puts band 5 at 95+ and band 5.5 at 107+, so totals from 95 to 106 compare to band 5.

Is the result official?

No. Only ETS issues official TOEFL scores. This calculator applies ETS's published rounding rule to the bands you enter.
