Taking a practice test before your real exam is one of the most useful things you can do in 2026. englishtestpractice.com has two options. The free TOEFL test takes about 20 minutes and gives you a quick estimate. The full mock tests cover all four sections with AI-scored Writing and Speaking, and they come with a Prep Pass.

Why Take a TOEFL Practice Test?

The 2026 TOEFL iBT introduced sweeping changes: a new 1–6 band scoring scale, three new Reading task types, four new Listening formats, and completely redesigned Writing and Speaking sections. Study materials from 2025 or earlier will not reflect the current format. A mock test built specifically for the 2026 exam fixes this problem immediately.

Beyond format familiarity, mock tests build exam stamina. The real TOEFL iBT runs for nearly two hours without long breaks. Candidates who have never practised under timed conditions consistently underperform their actual language ability on test day — simply because they run out of focus, not language skill.

✏️
Students who complete at least two full mock tests before their real TOEFL typically improve their overall band by 0.5–1.0 compared to students who only practised by section.

The Free Test and the Full Mock Tests

The free TOEFL test at /free-toefl-test takes about 20 minutes. You do not need to sign in to start. It covers Reading and Listening only: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Listen and Choose a Response, and one Conversation. Your result is an estimated band range, a CEFR level, and your weakest skill. For a full score, the mock tests (with a Prep Pass, see /pricing) cover all four sections with real exam timing:

SectionDurationItemsTask Types
Reading~30 min~50Complete Words, Daily Life, Academic Passage
Listening~29 min~47Choose Response, Conversation, Announcement, Academic Talk
Writing~23 min3Build Sentence, Write an Email, Academic Discussion
Speaking~8 min2Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview

In the mock tests, every section is timed with a visible countdown. Module breaks are included so you experience the full pacing of the real exam, not just isolated question practice. After a mock test, you receive a score report showing your band for each section, CEFR level, and performance breakdown.

How AI Scoring Works

Reading and Listening results are scored automatically the moment you finish each section. Your correct answer count maps to a band score (1.0–6.0) using conversion tables calibrated to the 2026 ETS scoring scale.

Writing and Speaking are scored only in the mock tests. Writing responses are evaluated by an AI model trained on TOEFL scoring rubrics. It analyses task completion, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary range, grammatical accuracy, and word count. The Academic Discussion task is penalised for responses under 100 words, matching the real exam. Scores typically appear within 30 seconds.

Speaking responses are recorded in your browser using your microphone and evaluated by an AI model that measures fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary range, grammatical control, and response completeness. Very short responses or extended silences are penalised, exactly as they are by real TOEFL examiners.

💡
Your mock test score report shows band scores for all four sections, a CEFR level (A2–C2), an approximate equivalent on the old 0–120 scale, and a total score. Writing and Speaking scores typically arrive within 60 seconds of test completion.

How to Use Your Results

Once your score report is ready, identify your lowest-scoring section first — that is where focused study will have the greatest effect. Most candidates find Reading and Listening bands are 0.5–1.0 higher than Writing and Speaking, because productive skills require more deliberate practice over time.

  • ▸Reading below 4.0: Focus on academic vocabulary and inference question strategies. Practise eliminating wrong answers before selecting the right one.
  • ▸Listening below 4.0: Practise with academic lectures. Work on distinguishing main ideas from supporting details in real time.
  • ▸Writing below 4.0: Study the Email and Academic Discussion rubrics explicitly. Write timed responses daily — even 10 minutes a day builds speed and fluency.
  • ▸Speaking below 4.0: Record yourself answering interview questions. Count filler words ('um', 'uh') per minute and actively reduce them.

Take the mock test again after two to three weeks of targeted study. Comparing your scores across attempts is the most reliable way to measure genuine improvement — and to decide whether you're ready to book your real TOEFL iBT date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is free, and what needs a Prep Pass?

The 20-minute free TOEFL test is free, and you do not need to sign in to start. It covers Reading and Listening and gives you an estimated band range, a CEFR level, and your weakest skill. The full mock tests, including AI scoring for Writing and Speaking, need a Prep Pass. See the pricing page for details.

How accurate is AI scoring compared to official TOEFL scoring?

Reading and Listening scoring is objective and matches the official format exactly. For Writing and Speaking, AI scoring uses the official 2026 TOEFL iBT rubric criteria. We have not yet measured how closely it matches official TOEFL scores, so treat Writing and Speaking bands as practice estimates rather than predictions of your official result.

How many mock tests should I take?

Most candidates benefit from three attempts: one as an initial diagnostic, one after a focused study period, and one as a final check one to two weeks before their real exam.

Does this test match the 2026 TOEFL iBT format?

Yes. The mock tests on englishtestpractice.com are built specifically for the January 2026 TOEFL iBT format, including the 1–6 band scale, all current task types, and the adaptive module structure. They are not an official ETS product, but they are designed to be as format-accurate as possible.
